a last minute change of plans and i was driving all the way to redondo to chase a red sun. redondo is spanish for round. the sun, to its credit, was doing both.
it was boiling red when i pulled in, minutes from gone. by the time i found parking and ran out with the camera, the haze had already mucked up most of that deep red.
sunset wasn’t until 8:24, so this wasn’t a setting sun. this was a hiding sun. through the haze it could have passed for the moon. two men fished off the pier. neither looked up.
redondo itself was the quieter surprise. a long boardwalk beside the water, small coastal houses with a wooded hillside rising behind them. lights set low in the railing, spilling gold on the concrete. for a moment it reminded me of a tiny coastal town somewhere in japan.
not the sunset i was chasing. i took the pictures anyway.
